5 Ways to Destress

4/4/2019

1) Take some deep breaths

You may just need to take a moment to breathe. Often times when we are anxious or stressed out we will tense up and take shallow breaths. This is a defense mechanism that comes naturally to us. One way to combat it is to take 10 long deep breath. You can do this anywhere (including in meetings) but to get the most out of the exercise you may want to find a quiet corner with no one moving around close your eyes and take the breaths.

2) Make a list

When you are ruminating over the “million” things that you have to get done, you can really get going in circle and get yourself pretty wound up. One of the best ways to fight this problem is just to get everything down on paper/ to-do list on your phone. When you get everything down you begin so see that your list may not be as insurmountable that you may have thought before. Taking it out of your head and making it a concrete list removes it from the abstract and gives your mind something concrete to focus on. It also relives the stress of thinking that you’re forgetting to do something. It is a good practice to start your day at work by making a list of what you plan to achieve that day in bite sized chunks and tackling those things one at a time.

3) Take a page out of Buddha’s book: Meditate

Add meditation into your morning routine. Ideally use the first 10 minutes of your day for it. Don’t worry about clearing your mind or trying to repeat a mantra over and over. Just take some time to be with yourself. Just try to be completely in the moment and check in with yourself. You can do this by taking a mental inventory of all of the physical sensations you are feeling. You can even pray. Just anything to start your day thinking about yourself and not what the day will hold. Self-care is of paramount importance.

4) Get outside

I know that it is really difficult to pull away from Instagram, Facebook, and your emails, but it is really important to just get outside and take in some fresh air. Go out without your phone, so that it won’t distract you and reacquaint yourself with nature. Watch the birds chase each other, or the squirrels packing acorns into a nook of a tree. If you’re fortunate enough to be close to a body of water, watch and listen to it. Observe each moment. Being outdoors is healing to both the mind and body.

5) WORKOUT

I feel in credible after a workout thanks to the endorphins that are coursing through my body. Nothing like a good old workout high. When you work out you aren’t able to focus on much more that the next rep or getting through the next high intensity interval on the elliptical. Working out allows you to get out any pent-up frustration of anxiety that you have with the effort that you are putting out. Movement is one of the best ways to reduce stress.

These are just 5 ways that have helped me to destress. There are numerous other ways to relax. All that matters is that you do them.

How to Stay Calm Through Wedding Planning

3/3/2019

When planning your special day, there are so many factors to consider- and it can get overwhelming so quickly.  When putting all the work in, it is important to stay calm, and here are some ways to do that:

1. Stay healthy
In the midst of making all your plans, remember the importance of eating and drinking what your body needs most.  Instead of working late into the night and going to get a late night fast food meal, ensure that you are eating a balanced meal.  Just as you were taught in school, focus on the five food groups and ensure that you are drinking plenty of water.

2. Delegate Tasks
This is a busy time, and the great news is, you probably know some people that would love to help out.  Bring friends over to help address the labels, and accept help when your family offers to pick up the flowers.  Of course you could do it on your own, but if others are willing to lend a hand, show your gratefulness by saying thank you.  The extra sleep you get will be well worth it!

3.  Get the right vendors
When it comes to your special day, we know that you want the right caterer, photographer, venue, and everything in between.  What is often overlooked are some tiny details that make a big difference.
If you are planning an outdoor event, do not forget the importance of finding the right porta potty company that will supply hand washing stations or even restroom trailers if that is what you need.  You will want to keep lines moving quickly and make sure that your guests feel comfortable.  When they are dancing the night away under the stars, you want to ensure that all their needs are taken care of.  You can help them do that by ensuring you have the best company for the job.

How to stay calm after a car accident

1/9/2019

Picture
Unfortunately, it happens. You are on your way home from a movie, the roads are slick after a snow storm and BAM!  You’ve had a car accident. It is clearly the last thing that anyone wants to have happen. When this happens some of us loose our cool and do and say things that we come to regret later. Particularly when family is involving. While this is a completely understandable response, here are some of the thing that you will want to keep in mind if in fact you do end up having a car accident.

Take a few deep breaths
This is one of the easiest ways to calm ourselves when our adrenaline is pumping and we inadvertently switch in to survival mode. Taking slow deep breaths slows the heart rate and relaxes the muscles along with the added benefit of decreasing anxiety. You will want to have a calm demeanor and clear head when you are dealing with a person with whom you’ve just had an accident.

Make sure that everyone in your vehicle is uninjured
If it is unsafe for you to remain in the vehicle, get everyone out as safely as possible and get them to the side of the road. Be careful in asking your passengers to move, as sometimes they may have sustained and injury and may not be aware of it.

Call the police
After making sure that everyone in your and the other persons’ vehicles is okay, contact the police so they can get assistance to you as soon as possible. Remember to keep a level head when describing the incident and location to the authorities as you don’t want to bring any more tension to a situation that is already filled with it.

Do not assign blame or admit fault
It’s best to only discuss the events with the authorities and allow them to determine who was at fault in the situation.

Exchange information
Exchange information with the other driver involved so that when you call your insurance provider you have all of the information needed to process the claim. Including the accident report number assigned by the investigating officer.

If necessary, call a towing company to recover your vehicle, and a family member or friend to pick you and your passengers up.

If you can call to mind these tips, the after math of a car accident can be much less volatile than it is apt to be. Just first remember to breathe and stay calm.
